Tips to achieve your hair goals
It can be daunting to visit a new salon. It can also be a challenge to find a new stylist that you love.
Here are a few tips and suggestions to help you achieve your hair goals when you visit your favourite stylist or have a consultation with a new stylist.
How to achieve your hair goals
We are a very friendly bunch here at the Painted Lady so feel free to bring along some images of your dream hair to help explain your hair goals. Try Pinterest We find it’s a great tool to brainstorm and create moodboards and find inspiration. You can see our pinterest here.
Instagram is also a great platform, follow us to see what we have been up to.
Be ready to answer some questions
We want to make sure we are on the same page as you before we start your hair journey. So here are a few questions that your stylist should ask you about your hair ambitions.
What do you like/love about your hair?
(We certainly don’t want to change what you love about your hair.)
What don’t you like about your hair or what do you want to change about your hair?
When was the last time you had it cut/coloured?
This is so we can get an idea of how short it was last time you had it cut or how much the colour has faded and even how quickly it grows.
How much time do you have to spend on your hair in the morning?
This is an important question, because some styles take a lot of blowdrying and styling in the mornings. We really want you to be able to recreate your style at home and if your a low maintenance kinda person we don’t want to be committing you to a life-time of ‘early rises’ so you can style your hair. 😉
How do you style your hair? Do you use any products?
How often do you wash your hair?
This might seem like a weird question, but if you are having a colour change, the frequency that you shampoo your hair can have an effect on how long your colour lasts.
Questions to ask us…
How long will it take?
Some colour services are a lot more in depth… Some people stay with us all day at the salon to achieve that perfect pink platinum or rainbow hair!!
what is the upkeep for this style/colour?
Do I need a patch test?
Yes! Definitely and in some cases a strand test to make sure your hair can be coloured safely.
Is it permanent colour?
If it is then just be aware that ALL colour fades to some extent.
How much will it cost?

Hair colouring: from colour to care
If you’re thinking about trying out a new hair colour, you’re probably wondering how to go about it. Our guide to summer hair explains the process of colouring your hair safely. Outlines some of the biggest colour trends and techniques, and also details the aftercare routine including how to make your hair soft and maintain your new hair colour.
Colouring your hair: the process
The process of colouring your hair depends a lot on your dream hair colour (We call it your target shade). Firstly we need to do a patch test and strand test to make sure we can lift your hair safely. Colouring very dark hair lighter is a long process, which can potentially take three to four visits to your colourist before it’s complete. Bear in mind that the faster you rush through the processes, the more damage you will do to your locks. Slow and steady wins the hair colour change race!
Hair colour: the trends
Hair trends are always changing, but recent years have seen a few stand the test of time:
- ‘Rose gold and Pink Ombre’ – blonde and peach tones that are an inspiring alternative to traditional shades
- Ice-cream pastels and rainbow – big colours, perfect show stoppers
- Denim – where grey meets navy for sophisticated, subtle colour as seen on beauty and lifestyle guru Danny DeFreitas
Of course, it’s not just specific colours that are popular – certain colouring techniques are also in vogue. Why not try balayage which involves freehand painting bleach onto the hair to create a very natural looking sun-bleached look? Or how about ombré (hair that is dark at the root and blends into a lighter shade towards the end) or sombré (a softer version that blends colours from higher up the head) for a more natural look? One benefit of all these techniques is that your colour commitment is very low! Meaning less visits to the salon.
Colouring your hair: the aftercare
Switching the colour of your hair is a fun way to bring a fresh new look, but you need to take extra care of your hair once you’ve coloured it.
- Wash your hair less frequently, and with cool water, to protect your hair colour
- Try using bond multiplying products such as olaplex before and after colour treatments to repair broken bonds in the hair shaft and help maintain the integrity of your hair
- Use specialist shampoos and conditioners to help keep the colour stronger for longer. (We really love mane tamer by EVO)
- Apply an intense, nourishing treatment weekly. This is one of the answers to make your hair soft again after colouring it – ideal if you’re worried about dry ends!
- Pay regular trips to your salon for touch-ups – your stylist can advise you on how often you should book yourself in. Or book in now for a free consultation
If you’re colouring your hair in time for summer then it is worth remembering that chlorine and salt water and the sun can damage coloured hair. Be sure to rinse your tresses thoroughly BEFORE and after hitting the pool or sea. you can also protect them with a sun protection spray or wear a hat while outside.
Now that you know what to consider before making a big change to your hair colour, plus how to take care of your hair and keep it healthy, the only question left is: which colour?

Olaplex with The Painted Lady Shoreditch, London
Why we love Olaplex in London
We were lucky enough to be one of the first hair salons to start using Olaplex in London. This revolutionary product launched in the Summer of 2015. Olaplex has been a game changer for hairdressers in Shoreditch and London but also for our clients.
We now have a lot of clients asking us for Olaplex but still a lot of people havent heard about it. So I thought it would be great to introduce you all to it.
What is Olaplex London?
Hair colouring world has not been the same since it arrived on to our shelves. Many of our clients still havent heard of it and always ask what it is and what it does.
OLAPLEX contains a single active ingredient, designed to reconnect the disulfide bonds broken by the process of permanent hair colouring and lightening. OLAPLEX™ is free of silicones, oils, ‘aldehydes and parabens. The active ingredient is called Bis-Aminopropyl Diglycol Dimaleate, this is neither a keratin nor a protein.
How does Olaplex work?
Olaplex comes in 3 parts.
This is the strongest part, it has the highest concentration of Bis-Aminopropyl Diglycol Dimaleate (lets call it BAD-D) You can either put it in your colour service or use it as a stand alone treatment.
Part two has a slightly lower concentrate of the active ingredient BADD this goes over the top of part one in the stand alone treatment or over the top of all your hair once your colour treatment has been rinsed off.
Part three is the take home part that you can use at home between your visits to the salon.
Because Olaplex isnt protein or keratin product you still need to continue using protein and moisturising treatments in the form of a salon quality shampoo and conditioner to maintain the health of your hair. Our amazing team can recommend one of our boutique products that would best suit your hair.
Why we love Olaplex at The Painted Lady
We love Olaplex at the Painted Lady because it has made all of our colour dreams become reality.
It has suddenly made the impossible possible. (within reason) We think Olaplex is an amazing product, but it please be aware, if your hair is already severely damaged it may take some time to build up the integrity of your hair again.

Fifty shades of Danny
*SALON CRUSH ALERT*
On a gloomy Monday afternoon, a few weeks ago, we were lucky enough to have our day brightened up by beauty and lifestyle guru Danny Defreitas. Danny decided that he wanted to experience the ultimate hair transformation, and what bigger change could we offer than a silver fox bleach and tone. As a natural brunette we asked Danny to pop in to the salon on Redchurch street for a patch test and strand test a few days before. This was so we could check that it was safe and also possible to lift his hair.
It was such a fun day with the simply charming Danny and what a transformation. We are in love with Danny’s new silver fox hair and also him!
Here are some of Danny’s cute insta story videos he posted about his colour journey during his visit to the Painted Lady.
After the first bleach
Waiting for the bleach to process
Drying off after the toner.
We love doing this kind of work. But it is always good to note that the process can take all day and sometimes needs to be finished over 2 days.
It is also important to have a strand and patch test so that we can check that these extreme colours are actually possible to achieve.
Those of you who have completely natural hair are few and far between, which makes having a strand test even more important. Do feel free to drop us a line if you are considering having an exciting or extreme hair colour change, we would love to hear from you. We offer complimentary colour consultations in our Salon on Redchurch Street, it only takes about 5 or 10 minutes.
You can see Danny’s full youtube video here
We are so excited to welcome Jordan to the team. Jordan began his love affair with hair in Guernsey at the tender age of 16. After achieving his city and guilds qualification in hair, he set his sights further afield to learn more. The Sassoon academy in London seemed like the perfect place to begin his hairstyling journey before heading up to Manchester to hone his skills. In Manchester, … Read More The new guy!
Gone are the days of sitting for 2 hours to have a full head of foil highlights packed into your hair… Balayage
has been coming increasingly popular in the mainstream and now at the painted lady it is one of our most popular colour services…
What is a balayage?
Is a freehand highlighting technique that creates natural looking highlights… also known as Californian highlights the word “Balayage” comes from a French word meaning “to sweep”.
In Balayage just the surface of the hair is coloured to create dimension and a more natural look. This technique looks like natural sun-kissed highlights throughout the hair. The transition is more natural and it is less maintenance than an ombre.
Does a balayage damage my hair?
All colour services can slightly damage your hair. But using Olaplex can drastically reduce breakage. Have a look here to find out more about Olaplex
We always recommend you use a salon quality shampoo conditioner and hair mask to keep your hair silky and soft after the colour process. At the Painted Lady we use Davines and Evo, both eco conscious
and animal friendly brands.
Does a balayage have to be blonde?
No, once we have lightened the hair we can tone with many other shades depending on how light your hair has been lifted. We tone now with of fun colours such as blue pink and purple
How often do i need to maintain the colour
Because the colour is softly blended it grows out beautifully and more naturally so you won’t get an obvious regrowth line and and can wear it for longer between appointments.
And for the virgin hair girls, balayage is the perfect way to start your hair colour adventure because it is can be so natural that there is very little commitment after you have it coloured for the first time.
Is it suitable for all hair types/lengths?
It works on both light and dark hair.
Most hairdressers would agree that you will achieve best results on virgin hair, but who has virgin hair colour these days right?
You would need to come in for a strand test and a patch test before hand to see that we can safely lift your hair.
Balayage can also look amazing on really curly hair to create beautiful depth to the colour and it is equally lovely on straight hair too.
What if my hair is really dark and I want it really light?
In this case, especially if you have already had colour on your hair, we would need to do a strand test to see how much it will lift.
How do you do a strand test?
A strand test is when we take a small amount of your hair from the back where yo cant see it and lift colour using bleach to see that the integrity of the hair is maintained. One of our qualified stylists will be back in touch to let you know how the colour lifted.

Back in July I was asked to become a brand ambassador for Lipcote’s new campaign #LockYourLook. Having been a fan of lipcote for years, of course I said ‘Yes!’
So on a lovely English summer morning (it was raining) I jumped in an Uber, with my five year old Violet in tow, to South London to the studio of master photographer, Simon Webb for a photo and video shoot.
I had to start my preparation for the shoot the day before by having my hair blowdried by my colleague Alice. I knew time would be short to get everything prepared on the day and I had to help prepare for an event at the Painted Lady before I went over. When Violet and I arrived at the studio it was all hands on deck (amazing team work) Another ambassador, the beautiful Julia, was the resident makeup artist perfecting our Lipcote pouts and making sure the makeup was flawless. Even Tommy the wonder dog was on hand for cuddles all afternoon.
It was such a lovely day full of laughs and I got to meet some amazing personalities, leading Instagrammers, and video bloggers from the beauty industry. All passionate about great beauty products, all fabulous, all special.
I was first introduced to Lipcote by my good friend Teresa and because I love wearing bright coloured lipsticks I instantly fell in love with the brand. Lipcote was and is the perfect solution to stop the lipstick wearing off during my busy days working cutting hair, running the Painted lady alongside my talented team and also doing mum stuff (Got to stay glam!). I have collaborated a number of times over the years with Lipcote producing super cute ‘how to ‘ videos and supporting each other by hosting charity events together.
For a bit of ‘back in the day’ beauty video DIY have a look here…
This week I am being featured on the Lipcote journal. Check out their feature here
